We all love watching movies, don’t we? And who hasn’t heard of Hollywood? But do you know its history?
The place owes its name and existence to a married couple by the name of Wilcox. In 1886 Daeida and Harvey Wilcox purchased the land in the area of Los Angeles, and Daeida later decided to name it Hollywood. Then, in the early 20th century, colonel William Selig bought a piece of the land from the Wilcox couple to start his private film company. Selig was often called a pioneer of the motion picture movement in the United States, and his company was one of the first ones in Los Angeles.
By 1920s, all of the major film companies, such as Columbia, Universal, Paramount and Warner Bros have opened up branches in Hollywood, and the place became known as the US film centre. Nowadays, Hollywood is a summarized name for the entire American movie industry
The famous Hollywood Walk of Fame was opened in 1958. It was made to honor people who contribute to the movie industry. A star at the Walk of Fame is awarded for outstanding achievements in music, cinematography, theatre art, TV and radio industries. As of now, there are more than 2500 bronze stars embedded at the alley.
