What does the red colour stand for in Russia?
The words “red” (“krasniy”) and “beautiful” (“krasiviy”) sound much the same in the Russian language, and they are of the same root in fact. Since ancient times they have been used as synonyms. In Rus there were expressions “krasna devitsa” (“a beautiful girl”) and “krasno solnyshko” (“the beautiful sun”) used not only to demonstrate the outward beauty, but also the importance for the people. The colour was one of the most frequently used for the rituals of all Slavic tribes. It symbolized a holiday, luxury, high spirits.
In the Soviet Union red was very significant. It was used as the colour of the national flag, and the pioneers’ scarves were also red. It was the colouring of blood and revolution, bright and flaming. The Army in the USSR was also initially “red”. A little later the “red letter days” – national holidays appeared.
The modern Russian flag also contains a red stripe. It is believed to denote great powerness, force and strength of our country. Whatever it may be the scarlet in our culture has always meant energy, solemnity and good humour.
