The Netherlands is situated in northwestern Europe, bordering Belgium in the South and Germany in the West. Just like its neighbours, the nation is a part of the European Union.

The name of the country speaks for itself. Translated from Dutch, Netherlands means “lower” lands, which really is the case here. The land is located below sea level, which always keeps the citizens in danger of unexpected flooding. However, the government has invested a lot into dams and other water-protective projects, and continues to do so to prevent floods from happening.

While most of the world associates the country with impressionist artists, tulips and clogs, there’s much more to it. Historically, the Netherlands has been one of the major finance and trade centres. The first and the biggest European banks originated there. Weirdly enough, the country’s inconvenient low location is one of the reasons for its involvement in finance: due to constant floods, sustainable growth of crops was impossible, which encouraged the Dutch to engage in world trade as early as the 15th century!
